Diverter valve, or also called blow off valves, are installed in serial turbo vehicles and needed at vehicles with turbo retrofits. This has the following reason: When the throttle pipe is closing at turbo-gasoline engines, the moving air column meets the throttle pipe.
The air column (pressure column) turns around, goes to the turning compressor impeller and slows it down, which can cause damage through the higher boost pressure.
The charger can turn around without breaks and renewed pressure build up is shortened. A faster acceleration of the turbocharger, in favour for a better response, after the shifting operation is achieved.
From the point of view of equality, however, diverter valves still have to be differentiated into closed and opened systems. In the open system, the not needed pressure is not transferred back to the intake channel.
It´s transferred into the environment. At the closed system the unneeded pressure is getting back to the intake section.
